Fall has arrived and we are ready for another trip to Cajun Country. With the help of Bill Fontenot, Dr. Dennis Woolard, and some amazing Lafayette Master Gardeners, we have lined up some wonderful private gardens and private guided tours of others.
Just a couple of highlights include:
An informal 4 acre garden on Bayou Vermillion filled to the brim with whimsical and refined garden art, as well as a southern gardener’s dream array of annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees. The garden has evolved over the last 34 years from a tree-filled lot to a botanical heaven replete with pergolas, arches, arbors, gazebos, water fountains (like a claw foot bathtub) and trellises everywhere you turn. Everything in this garden has a story. You’ll want to sit back, relax, and take in its beauty.
Another Southern Country Garden that is spread over 2 ½ acres is on our itinerary. The word is, “If anybody has it, they do.” Among the many outdoor rooms, the largest is the spacious front entrance garden which contains a large sugar kettle, statues and a large variety of shrubs. Plants for various seasons include huge camellias, bulbs, ornamental magnolias, wisteria, azaleas, roses, Creole Easter lilies, clematis, cherry and crabapple trees, day lilies, agapanthus, plumbago, and ornamental sweet potato vines and a huge collection of gingers, cassia, salvias, and sunflowers. To embellish the garden throughout, special effects include annuals, additional perennials and wooden structures. The variety of fruit trees, berries, and vegetables make the gardens a delight to the taste buds and to the eye.
We are still in the process of fine tuning our itinerary however, our trip would not be complete without a wonderful food adventure! Our lunch stop will be at Prejean’s, highly recommended by Lafayette natives for over 30 years. In addition to a flavorful meal from appetizer to dessert, there will be a live Cajun band to entertain us. Put your dancing shoes on, Cher!
