| Friends of Hilltop
The Friends of LSU Hilltop Arboretum, whose offices are on the grounds of the arboretum, was formed in 1982 with guidance from founder Emory Smith. It is a non-profit organization that works in close partnership with LSU to maintain and enhance the arboretum and work toward the implementation of the master plan developed for the site. Friends of Hilltop are committed to the preservation and development of Hilltop as a natural preserve of native southern trees, shrubs, and wildflowers and encourages its free and effective use by the community.
Friends of Hilltop provide volunteer services and financial support for the arboretum. Their volunteers and staff conduct guided tours, sponsor educational programs, and hold community events throughout the year, including the annual PlantFest! plant sale, garden tours in the Spring and Fall, a January Symposium, day trips to regional gardens of interest, and more. Friends of Hilltop publishes a quarterly newsletter, "Hilltop: My Story" by Emory Smith, and "A Pocket Guide to Louisiana Native Trees".
